To a material in 7 years has collected at me much, my thoughts have brightened and were established … »

Alas, these lines of the author of "Double" look boasting. However, first finished "product" from under its languid feather which has weaned from regular work all the same left-was born in April, 1854, but inverted commas here are used knowingly — is better this "product" Dostoevsky would not create. Having terminated it, I will write the novel from the Petersburg life, like «Poor people» (and the thought is even better than "Poor people»), both these things have been begun for a long time by me and chastiju are written, difficulties do not represent, job goes fine, and on 15th of December I send in "Bulletin" my 1st story … »Speech in this case there is, most likely, about the story« a Village Stepanchikovo and its inhabitants »and the novel« Humiliated and offended ». Yes, really, in the first letter to the brother after an exit from a jail he asked that «the Children's fairy tale» not to show to anybody. But Feodor Mihajlovich as if has forgotten, that time and again then in letters to Michael Mihajlovichu (on November, 9th, 1856 , on March, 9th, 1857 ) and Vrangelju (on December, 21st, 1856 , on March, 9th, 2857 ) He it is live was interested in attempts to print this story, hurried them it to make. Feodor Mihajlovich as if has a presentiment-foresees, that subsequently its creative destiny will be very firmly connected with «Russian bulletin», therefore its this first letter-application to  M.N.Katkovu so vastly-is detailed and confidentially-frankly. In this message the writer, paraphrasing known Pushkin maksimu from «Mozart and Salieri», will formulate the treasured credo-dream: «But job for money and job for art — for me two things not joint». And, alas, already on it, the very first business letter, the publisher of "Russian bulletin», the mister extremely business and punctual, will be convinced quite, that about terms prisylki in edition of manuscripts it is necessary to concern Dostoevsky's assurances-promises extremely cautiously. «To send the novel in the promised term I undertake by all means …», — the writer has assured. Promised for «Russian word» a thing — the story «Uncle's dream» — edition receives instead of April of 1857 only in January of next year, and in «Russian bulletin» the story «Village Stepanchikovo and its inhabitants» — and that parts! — 1859 will wait only in a year after the promised term, in the summer.

But, it is necessary to underline, the literary reputation of the author of "Poor people» was still so high, that Kushelev-Bezbordko was not afflicted with delay of "the Uncle's dream», and, on the contrary, has there and then sent to Dostoevsky new advance payment in one thousand roubles under one more novel promised to it. And Dostoevsky's literary reputation will steadily raise from product to product so though "Village Stepanchikovo" and has not appeared in «Russian bulletin», but subsequently Skating rinks will concern quite tolerantly infringement of the promised schedules by Dostoevsky prisylki manuscripts. In Semipalatinsk Dostoevsky thirsts to learn about what impression makes on public and whether makes in general the story «Uncle's dream»

The first poet A.N.Pleshcheev who has read it in the manuscript responds in the letter  : as a whole the response is positive («Generally the story is rather good …»), but the friend to a youth and does not hide, that expected bolshego, and that «the novel responds haste». In the same letter Alexey Nikolaevich notifies Feodor Mihajlovicha, that-de Turgenev passionately wishes to read «the Uncle's dream» as soon as possible, in a proof-reading. Already in Tver the writer greedy listens to the slightest messages-responses on the new products. But also «the uncle's dream», and "Village Stepanchikovo" which after long drudgeries on editions of "Russian bulletin» and "Contemporary" has appeared, at last, in last two numbers «Domestic notes» for 1859 and upon which the writer rested special hopes, — these hopes-expectations have not justified. Reading public has not learnt the author of "Poor people». He has deceived her. Vaudevillian plots, humour of the writer-convict have nonplused it. As if Belinsky's acute judgements-responses have been forgotten about young Dostoevsky: «At first sight it is visible, that talent of of Dostoevsky not satirical, not descriptive, but in high degree creative and that prevailing character of its talent — humour. <…> to make laugh and deeply to shake soul of the reader in one and too time, to force it to smile through tears, — what ability, what talent!.» Readers-critics as though absolutely also have forgotten, that before penal servitude Dostoevsky too created-printed purely comic vaudevillian things like stories «Another's wife» and «the Jealous husband» (which in the uniform story «Another's wife and the husband under a bed» subsequently soedinilis-have merged).

As a result, professional critics remained in the absolute bewilderment and Dostoevsky's who has come back in the literature Siberian products have amicably become silent. Certainly, in it there is a big share of fault and Dostoevsky. Well absolutely, apparently, it is not clear, why it has begun with comic vaudevilles when all waited from it at once something like «for Notes from the Dead house». Alas, the writer was simply reinsured.

When in 1873 the Moscow student M.P.Fyodorov has asked from the writer of the permission to alter history «from mordasovskih annals» for a scene, Dostoevsky has frankly written-has explained to it: «… 15 years I did not re-read my story« Uncle's dream ». Now, having re-read, I find it plohoju. I have written it then in Siberia, for the first time after penal servitude, is unique to begin again on purpose a literary field, and awfully being afraid of censorship (as to the former exiled). Poet Vasja decides to die voluntary in rather romantic way — to kill itself a transient consumption. Perhaps, and so, — but all somehow seems to me, Zinochka, as here has not done without sweet romantic nonsenses! All the same at me was then thought: as it will be beautiful, that here I will lay on bed, dying in a consumption, and you all will be killed, suffer, that have finished me to a consumption; itself you will come to me with povinnoju, you will fall predo me to knees... I excuse you, dying on your hands … »

If what critic then, in 1859, undertook nevertheless to assort the revived Dostoevsky's first story, it behind the cascade of comic scenes and images hardly would pay special attention on tragical destiny of poet Vasi, on a drama problem of talent perishing in poverty. And if has turned, quite could drop the remark, that-de Mr. Dostoevsky has invented rather exotic and absolutely unreal way of suicide for the unfortunate hero-writer. And only then, reading in one and a half-two year documentary-memoirs «Notes from the Dead house», this our hypothetical critic would learn, that leaving from a life by means of infused wine on tobacco exists in a real life and is thought up-is invented by one sharp-witted convict far from poetic romanticism. However, ostrozhnyj the poor fellow in such a way tried to change only a fate, to be unwell only slightly and to avoid punishment by sticks, however has not calculated a dose and was lost. But after all here that else it is necessary to note: in this story there is one more dead person and too after all if to call things by their proper names, — the suicide. It is a question of the header character of "the Uncle's dream» — the prince K. Yes, yes! And meanwhile to Dostoevsky the life in Tver is already intolerable.

This provincial city situated near Moscow for it becomes more hated even Semipalatinsk, even gluhomannogo mythical Mordasova. Also we will notice in brackets, that in those days letters from northern capital reached Tver, unlike our days, less than for days. However, the writer did not arrange even such — much more favorable in comparison with Siberia for creative job — conditions. It is torn in capital, is direct that environment-atmosphere where only and rather literary-journal life boils. And if earlier, in Semipalatinsk, he dreamt at least of Moscow, achieved the permission to live in it now for it the earth promised was only — Petersburg, Petersburg and more times Petersburg.

From each attack I probably lose memory, imagination, sincere and corporal forces. An outcome of my illness — a relaxation (that is, — a paralysis. — NN) Death or madness.
